Philip Zimbardo, a psychologist American of Italian descent, is called the “face and voice of modern psychology” and considered a promoter of psychology, mainly due to public appearances in the series of programs “Discovering Psychology.” For many years a lecturer, including Yale University, New York, since 1968 a professor at Stanford University, now retired. He served as chairman of the American Psychological Association and the Western Psychological Association. Among the most important scientific interests of Professor’s study on the cause and type of human behavior in emergency situations. The result of his scientific inquiry has become one of the most famous experiments in the history of psychology, which also brought worldwide recognition to Professor – The Stanford Prison Project


What was the Stanford Prison Project?

Professor Zimbardo and his colleagues in 1971 at Stanford University initiated the project, which consisted of examining the individual behavior during the strong social impact of using simulation of prison life in the basement of the University. It participated in the experiment 24 healthy students who were randomly divided into prisoners and guards. The project proved that the specific conditions affect the behavior of mentally healthy person, which in the experiment confirmed the acceptance by the participants defined roles – brutal and sadistic torturers and victims, planning to escape or inciting rebellion.

Among Professor interests include research on shyness, which gave impetus to the establishment of the Department of shyness at the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology in Palo Alto. Another important project by Professor Project is Heroic Imagination, aimed primarily at young people, shaping their attitudes, the purpose of which is to realize how important is the ability to take legitimate action in emergency situations, the importance of noticing and preventing social phenomena that could escalate into conflict. The project uses the achievements of psychology and converting it into a positive, and – most importantly – a real social change.
